چکیده

A popular wavelet method for estimating jumps in functions is through the use of the translation invariant (TI) estimator. The TI estimator addresses a particular problem, the susceptibility of wavelet estimates to the location of features in a function with respect to the support of the wavelet basis functions. The TI estimator reduces this reliance by cycling the data through a set of shifts, thus changing the relation between the wavelet support and the jump location. However, a drawback to TI is that it includes every shifted analysis in the reconstruction, even those that may reduce, rather than improve, the effectiveness of the method. In this paper, we propose a method that modifies the TI to improve jump reconstruction in terms of mean square error of the reconstructions and visual performance. Information from the set of shifted data sets is used to mimic the performance of an oracle which knows exactly which are the best TI shifts to retain in the reconstruction. The TI estimate is a special case of the proposed method. A simulation study comparing this proposed method to existing wavelet estimators and the oracle is provided.

A translation-invariant denoising method, based on the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion and the Shift-Invariant Wavelet Packet Decomposition (SIWPD) is presented. A collection of signal models is generated using an extended library of orthonormal wavelet-packet bases, and an additive cost function, approximately representing the MDL principle, is derived. We show that the minimum desc...

Can Wavelet Denoising Improve Motor Unit Potential Template Estimation?

Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from a contracted muscle contain valuable information on its activity and health status. Much of this information lies in motor unit potentials (MUPs) of its motor units (MUs), collected during the muscle contraction. Hence, accurate estimation of a MUP template for each MU is crucial. Objective: To investigate the possibility of improv...

Statistical Wavelet-based Image Denoising using Scale Mixture of Normal Distributions with Adaptive Parameter Estimation

Removing noise from images is a challenging problem in digital image processing. This paper presents an image denoising method based on a maximum a posteriori (MAP) density function estimator, which is implemented in the wavelet domain because of its energy compaction property. The performance of the MAP estimator depends on the proposed model for noise-free wavelet coefficients. Thus in the wa...
